Happy Friday!  Today was a lot of fun!  We met our buddies for the first time and watched the 5th grade classes vs. the Crestwood teachers play kickball!  A great time was had by all!

DAILY REMINDERS:

• Homework:  Read and practice tying shoes.
• Weekly Reading Record is due if your child did not turn it in today.
• Don't forget to pack a healthy snack on Monday.
• We will "preview" the Book Fair on Monday with our buddies.  The Book Fair is open next week Tuesday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

A lot of learning took place in Room 13 today:

• We took our Week 3 Spelling Test.  I gave them a practice dictation sentence.  I was pleased with how well most first graders did this first time.  The most frequent mistakes were forgetting to write a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and not leaving space between their words.  Next week their dictation sentence will be part of their spelling test grade.  Please read yesterday's blog for more details about the dictation sentence.
• For writing today we started working in our First Grade Book Critic writing book.  Every week we read 1-2 big books during our shared reading time, and then I use the text to teach first grade reading and writing skills.  After reading One Red Rooster I modeled writing a new sentence for the book that followed the same pattern the author used for her book.  The students then wrote their own new sentence and illustrated it in their book critic book.
• Our fun Friday project was tracing and cutting out a red rooster and then cutting and gluing the number words and color words from the story in numerical order (one red rooster, two black cows....) onto their rooster.
• After lunch we met our buddies (4th graders from Mrs. Lueking's class) and watched the kickball game with them.
• No math or science today due to our special (Technology) and the kickball game in the afternoon.
