A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF YOUR FIRST GRADER:
***Share Reading--We're reading the big book "A Mother For Choco". We will be discussing text to text connection, cause and effect, author's purpose, and story elements.
***Word Work--Our spelling words this week are: write, around, best, cold, first. We reviewed the spelling patterns in some of the words, and we'll also discuss the number of syllables, vowels and consonants each word has. We're also going to sort words with long and short vowel sounds for review and assessment.
***Writing--We are working on using and remembering the writing process this week. It's important that we always plan our stories, write a rough draft (sloppy copy), proofread our pieces and edit them. Once we have completed these steps we are ready to publish our piece.
***Math--This week our focus is telling time to the hour and half hour. We are also estimating how long a minute is and how long certain tasks will take us.
***Science--Animals, animals and more animals. We are learning about 6 animal groups (reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds, fish and insects) and the characteristics that set each group apart from the others. We have also spent time discussing the differences between living and nonliving things.
Yesterday we had the opportunity to Skype with a famous author named Carmen Agra Deedy in our library. See the pictures below.
