***Half day on Friday. Dismissal at 11:50-NO LUNCH SERVED. Please remember to send a note or call the office if your first grader is going home a different way than usual on Friday.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF YOUR FIRST GRADER:
***Shared Reading: This week we are reading the story "George Shrinks" by William Joyce. Our main focus will be retelling the events in the story and answering comprehension questions using PQPA (Part of the Question for Part of the Answer). When we retell a story it's important we include the character's names, the setting, the problem and solution, the events in the correct order and remember to tell what characters say in the story.
***Word Work: We continue to work on recognizing and identifying contractions. We will go on a word hunt and try to locate as many contractions as we can in the books we have in our book boxes.
Writing: Descriptive writing will be our focus this week. We are going to learn about adjectives, practice describing certain items, and write a story using a variety describing words.
***Math: In math we are going to work on related facts, fact families to 12, addition and subtraction facts to 12, finding the missing number in addition and subtraction sentences, and choosing the operation after reading a math story.
***Science: We are learning about MATTER. There are three types of matter (solids, liquids, and gas).

REMINDERS:
***Wednesday, March 6th is PRINCIPAL'S DAY!
***Thursday, March 7th--PTO Meeting @ 7:00 p.m.
***Friday, March 8th--Week 24 Spelling Test, Library, Weekly Reading Record due
***Monday, March 18-Donations for Math-a-Thon due.
A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF YOUR FIRST GRADER:
***Shared Reading-We're reading the story "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" and finding contractions within the text.
***Word Work-We continue to work on our CVC spelling pattern word sort. These words are spelled with a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern and the vowel sound in CVC words is usually short (example-big).
***Writing-This week we are working on our end of quarter writing assessment. When I grade these pieces, I am checking for complete sentences in a paragraph that has a main idea with details. I am also checking their conventions of writing (capitals, ending marks, spacing etc...).
***Math-Yesterday we took a test over our last chapter that focused on skip counting, even and odd numbers, and number patterns. Today we are beginning a new math chapter that reviews addition strategies such as counting on, doubles and doubles plus one facts. We will also learn the strategy for adding 3 numbers.
***Social Studies-This week we are learning more about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. We will also do a couple fun projects on Lincoln and Washington.
