Week of February 25th

Hello! Welcome back after our snow days! Since we missed 2 days of learning, we've "hit the ground running" and we're busy catching up this week.

DAILY REMINDERS:
***PRISM Night is this Wednesday, February 27 from 3:30-5:30 in the Crestwood gym.
***The EFG card campaign (fundraiser) begins tomorrow. Your first grader has a large envelope in their folder today explaining how this fundraiser works. The last day to participate is next Monday, March 4th.
***Week 23 spelling test is this Friday, March.
***Library this Friday
***We will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday this Friday.
***February journal calendar assignment is due this Friday, March 1st.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF YOUR FIRST GRADER:
***Shared reading-We are reading the story There's An Alligator Under My Bed by Mercer Mayer and we continue to practice putting words from the text into ABC order.
***Word Work-Week 23 words are: his, could, going open, live. We're also reviewing words with the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) spelling pattern (his, top, cat...).
***Writing-Our idea books are beginning to fill with lists so we have more ideas for our writing pieces. We are also going to write a poem about Dr. Seuss and make a special book for Mr. Taylor since next Wednesday is Principal's Day.
***Math-Skip counting, even and odd numbers, finding patterns on the hundred chart and in a table is our main focus in math this week.
***Social Studies-We continue work on unit 5--Presidents, American symbols, heroes etc...

February is Dental Health Month and we had a fun assembly last week. The Tooth Wizard and his pal Panda visited us and taught us good dental hygiene. Enjoy a few pictures taken at that assembly. Our friend, Sanjiv, was one of the students chosen to help Tooth Wizard and Panda teach us about plaque.

HAPPY BELATED PRESIDENT'S DAY! I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend! Our first graders must have been busy this past weekend. They came in sleepy today!

DAILY REMINDERS:
***PRISM Night is this Thursday, February 21st.
***Week 22 Spelling Test this Friday
***Library this Friday

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF YOUR FIRST GRADER:
***Shared reading: We are reading the story "Eek! There's a Mouse in the House" and our focus will be to identify rhyming words in the story and put them in ABC order.
***Word work: Our spelling words this week are some, let, an, then, once. We will be working on a variety of activities to help us learn Week 22 high frequency words.
***Writing: Our main focus is to begin working on our "Idea Book". This is a notebook where we will compile our ideas for writing stories. Since this Idea Book is very important to our writing process, we personalized it by decorating the cover.
***Math: The skills we are working on this week are skip counting (2's, 5's and 10's), using a Hundred Chart to skip count and find patterns when we skip count, identifying even and odd numbers, ordinal numbers and finding a pattern to problem solve.
***Social Studies: Unit 5 covers presidents, American heroes, rules and responsibilities, leaders, laws and rules.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

I want to apologize for not posting to our blog recently. Here is what we've been up to lately in Room 13:
Shared Reading:
**We read the story With My Brother and we worked on identifying words in the story that have base words and endings.
Word Work:
**We practiced Week 21 words by playing a learning game called "Sparkle" and using a flipchart called "Word Race".
Writing:
**We continue to work on our 5 page books. This week we learned how to write a "How To" story using the time order words first, next and finally.
Math:
**In math we are focusing on comparing numbers (greater than, less than, equal to), using the symbols to compare, order on a number line, counting forward and backward and problem solving for 10 more and 10 less.
Social Studies:
**Our unit is about leaders, government, heroes and symbols of our country.
